Once known as the Rams Nest Inn, this one-time boozer by the A283 has been given a new name and a contemporary makeover to bring it right up to date. Some of its eighteenth-century beams and other original features have been retained, and they blend seamlessly with leather sofas and polished wood floors. A log fire often blazes in the bar and there's an attractive covered terrace for al fresco meals. The Mulberry still sees itself as a modern-day country pub with accommodation: it has real ales on tap and serves traditional roasts for Sunday lunch, but elsewhere the emphasis on more contemporary ideas. Seasonal menus may kick off with 'Mulberry Moules' steamed in white wine, garlic and cream with oven-baked garlic bread on the side. Brasserie dishes dominate the rest of the menu, from pan-fried duck breast served on watercress and new potatoes topped with foie gras and a mango and star anise sauce to classic sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and home made vanilla ice cream. In between, expect anything from peppered venison salad with pesto and roasted tomatoes to beer-battered haddock fillet served with minted mushy peas and hand-cut chips. The wine list is funky and fashionable.
